Dear Church,

Imperium , a word you won’t hear in normal conversation. It means supreme power or absolute dominion. An authority over any other authority, where the buck stops, an authority to which all other authorities must answer. (Rev 6:16-17) Who is that person in our life?? Jesus said all authority in heaven and earth has been given to him. His church will therefore advance like an army that no one can stop despite persecution. The executive orders of rulers will not stop it, the court verdicts will not hamper it,  not even the gates of Hades will slow its progress. Jesus has Imperium over our lives and over His church and over everything else visible and invisible!.

Dear Church,

God tells Isaiah ‘comfort, comfort my people, speak tenderly to Jerusalem’ (Isaiah 40) despite the fact Judah still had 100 years of trouble plus 70 years of exile to follow. Yet, Isaiah was asked to speak comfort and hope into their lives. The seeds of comfort take root in the soil of adversity. Often times when our lives seems to be falling apart, when everything we hold onto  fails us, God’s comfort takes root! Sometimes the only comfort we have will be that. God’s comfort is not necessarily experienced in the  absence of trouble but the presence of Christ. Jesus said ‘in this world you will have trouble’ and he said ‘ I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace'( John 16:33). Accept trouble as a reality of our existence, embrace Jesus as the only source of peace, comfort, hope and provision.

Dear Church,

God asked Jonah, “do you have a right to be angry about the vine?” Jonah replied “I do, I am angry enough to die” Jonah was angry with God, because a worm chewed up a vine and it withered and destroyed the only shade he had. He could have interceded on behalf of Nineveh and rejoiced  in God’s compassion and mercy over that nation. He could have danced through the streets of Nineveh exulting  God  for his kindness. How easy is it to be angry and frustrated about our own interest than the spiritual needs of people around us, including those who persecute us. Whose glory are we living for?

Dear Church

How do we properly respond to God’s awesomeness and eternal qualities living in a world opposed to him and even hating him. So a simple question why would God make 350,000,000,000 galaxies (and probably more). Or why would God put 3000 different species of trees within one square mile in the Amazon jungle. Could it be that he wanted us to see them and say “wow! what an amazingly unfathomable God we have? Or does he just want us to respond, who do I think I am? How deplorably insignificant I am. Probably both. Yet our deplorability was worth saving for him, he paved a way for us to reach him through Jesus Christ. Sometimes we get so consumed in our problems and ignore the fact we have a God who promised that he will never leave or forsake us. So getting back to the original question? How do we properly respond to God’s awesomeness, he instructs us to worship him. Look out through your windows. ‘The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after Day they put forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.’- Psalm 19: 1-4

Dear Church,

Martha, Martha…but only one thing is necessary. Loving Jesus comes first; out of that flows whatever work he has for us to do. Luke says Martha was ‘distracted’ by all the preparations to be made because Jesus was in the house. Often times our faith journey is characterized by distractions rather than devotion. We get our priorities mixed up. Sometimes fighting for a cause becomes the expression of devotion to Jesus, sometimes church administration and getting programs going becomes our devotion. But in reality these can turn into distractions, we can becomes exhausted Christians working for noble causes, missing a daily personal encounter with Jesus. That is the Martha predicament of our faith. Over time the work itself substitutes for Jesus, and seeking him seems harder than ‘doing’ more for him. Martha, Martha. You are worried and upset about many things…but only one thing is necessary. This morning are we focused on the one thing that is necessary?

What a wonderful Picnic !! Great fellowship, scrumptious food and lots of fun. Thank You Jeff and Amy for doing such a nice Job!
